Ito Jakuchu Art Prints – Edo-Period Bird and Botanical Painting

Ito Jakuchu (1716–1800) was an Edo-period painter from Kyoto whose vivid depictions of roosters, birds, and botanical subjects made him one of Japan's most celebrated artists. His ink and colour paintings combine obsessive natural detail with bold, almost surreal compositions — centuries ahead of their time. A former grocer, he gave up commerce at forty to paint full-time at the Shokoku-ji temple, producing a body of work that continues to astonish with its technical brilliance and imaginative power.

At Kuriosis, we reproduce Jakuchu's paintings using archival Japanese pigment inks rated for over 100 years of colour stability. Fine art paper prints are produced on 225g matte stock in sizes A3, 50×70 cm, 70×100 cm, and A0 — capturing the fine detail and vivid colour of works often painted with mineral pigments on silk. Canvas prints use 400g cotton canvas in 30×40 cm, 50×70 cm, and 70×100 cm, adding depth and texture that complements his layered brushwork. Framing options include oak, black, and walnut brown.

Obsessive Detail, Radical Composition

Jakuchu is known for paintings where every feather, petal, and leaf is individually rendered with microscopic precision — yet the overall composition feels free, dynamic, and almost abstract. His white macaw paintings exemplify this approach: a single bird observed with scientific accuracy but placed within a composition that feels more like a twentieth-century colour field than an eighteenth-century scroll. This tension between precision and imagination is what makes his work feel utterly contemporary.
