Otto Freundlich — Mosaic Abstraction and Colour as Structure

Otto Freundlich (1878-1943) was a German abstract painter and sculptor whose work treated colour as a structural element rather than decoration. Influenced by Cubism and Expressionism, he built compositions from irregular geometric forms — interlocking shapes in bold, saturated tones that create a mosaic-like visual rhythm. Works like Komposition (1938), Lichtkreise - Kosmischer Regenbogen, and Composition Abstraite show this approach at its most confident: colour fields that feel architectural, almost like stained glass translated onto canvas.

Freundlich was part of the European avant-garde scene in Paris and Berlin during the 1920s and 1930s. As a Jewish modernist, his work was declared degenerate by the Nazi regime and much of it was destroyed. He was murdered at Majdanek concentration camp in 1943. The surviving works represent some of the most original abstract painting of the early twentieth century — a body of work that anticipated movements like Abstract Expressionism by decades.

Every Freundlich print is reproduced in our Berlin studio using archival pigment inks rated for 100+ years of colour stability. The bold colour fields and geometric structures reproduce particularly well on 400g cotton canvas, where the texture adds depth to the mosaic-like surfaces. Fine art paper prints on 225g matte paper deliver sharp edges and accurate colour across the full tonal range. Paper sizes: A3, 50x70 cm, 70x100 cm, A0. Canvas sizes: 30x40 cm, 50x70 cm, 70x100 cm. Frames available in oak, black, and walnut brown.

Abstract Art Prints with Depth and Presence

Freundlich's compositions hold their own on large walls and in open spaces — the geometric structures and strong colours give them a visual weight that fills a room without overwhelming it. They work well in modern interiors, lofts, and spaces where art is meant to anchor the room rather than blend in.
