Rudolf Baschant Bauhaus Poster
Rudolf Baschant (1897-1955) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist who studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar under Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger, and Wassily Kandinsky. His most recognised work is the exhibition poster for the first Bauhaus show in 1923 — a bold, geometric composition that has become one of the defining images of the Bauhaus movement. Original prints of this poster are now held by MoMA in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
The poster itself is a striking example of early Bauhaus graphic design: strong geometric forms, limited colour palette, and typography integrated into the composition rather than applied on top of it. Baschant created several colour variations of the design, and our collection includes multiple versions — each with a distinct palette that shifts the mood of the same underlying composition. Beyond his graphic work, Baschant was also a dedicated botanist who assembled a herbarium of over 20,000 plant specimens collected across Europe and Africa, an unusual parallel career that speaks to the Bauhaus ideal of crossing disciplinary boundaries.
Printing and Materials
Every Rudolf Baschant poster reproduction is produced in our Berlin studio using archival pigment inks. The graphic quality of his Bauhaus poster designs — with their sharp geometric edges, flat colour fields, and integrated typography — reproduces with particular clarity on 225g matte fine art paper, available in A3, 50x70 cm, 70x100 cm, and A0. Canvas prints use 400g cotton, available in 30x40 cm, 50x70 cm, and 70x100 cm, adding a material warmth that gives the geometric designs a more tactile presence. Framing options include oak, black, and walnut brown. Canvas prints can be ordered with a floating frame for a gallery-style shadow gap.
Bauhaus Art and Design Prints
Baschant's poster sits at the intersection of fine art and graphic design — a piece of Bauhaus history that works equally well as a wall print and as a document of early modernist visual culture.
