Surrealism and the Unconscious Mind

Surrealism began in the 1920s with a clear aim: to bypass rational thought and tap into the unconscious. The movement produced some of the most recognizable imagery in Western art — melting clocks, impossible architectures, figures caught between dream and waking life. What makes Surrealism endure is its refusal to explain itself. The images work on a level that resists easy interpretation, which is exactly why they still hold attention a century later.

This collection includes both classic Surrealist works and contemporary artists working in that same tradition — unexpected juxtapositions, strange landscapes, and compositions that feel familiar and foreign at the same time.

Printing Surrealist Art

Surrealist works demand accurate colour reproduction and sharp detail — the dreamlike quality depends on precise tonal shifts and clean edges. We print on 225g matte fine art paper for crisp line detail, or 400g cotton canvas where the texture adds warmth to painterly compositions. All prints use archival pigment inks rated for over 100 years, produced in our Berlin studio.

Paper sizes: A3, 50x70cm, 70x100cm, A0. Canvas prints: 30x40cm, 50x70cm, 70x100cm. Framing options include oak, black, and walnut brown — canvas prints are also available with a floating frame for a gallery-style shadow gap.

Beyond Surrealism

If Surrealist art appeals to you, our abstract prints explore non-representational composition, while collage art shares the Surrealist love of unexpected combinations. For contemporary work with a dreamlike quality, see our contemporary artists collection.
