About Tsuchiya Koitsu's Woodblock Prints
Tsuchiya Koitsu spent nineteen years training under Kobayashi Kiyochika, one of the last great ukiyo-e masters, before finding his own voice within the shin-hanga movement. His most celebrated prints were produced when he was already in his sixties — late-career work that carries a lifetime of accumulated craft and observation. What defines Koitsu's prints is light. His night scenes glow — lanterns reflected in wet streets, temple gates illuminated against indigo skies, moonlight filtering through trees onto still water. The technical control required to achieve these effects in woodblock printing is extraordinary, involving precise bokashi gradation and multiple colour passes that build depth layer by layer.
Where other shin-hanga artists favoured daylight and seasonal atmosphere, Koitsu gravitated toward dusk and darkness, finding drama and beauty in the way artificial and natural light interact. His floating pavilion scenes and temple views have a cinematic quality — each composition carefully staged to draw the eye through layers of foreground, middle ground, and distant sky. Choosing the Right Format
Koitsu's night scenes demand accurate colour reproduction — the distinction between deep indigo and black, the warm glow of lantern light against cool shadow, the subtle gradations of a twilight sky. Fine art paper prints in A3, 50x70cm, 70x100cm, and A0 deliver this with precision. The 225g matte paper eliminates reflections that would interfere with the dark tones, and the archival pigment inks maintain the full tonal range from deepest shadow to brightest highlight. Black frames create a natural extension of the night-scene palette; oak frames add warmth that picks up the lantern tones. Canvas prints in 30x40cm, 50x70cm, and 70x100cm add a textile surface that gives the atmospheric scenes additional depth and presence on the wall. The 400g cotton canvas softens transitions in a way that suits the misty, luminous quality of the originals. An optional floating frame adds a shadow gap for gallery-quality presentation.
Displaying Koitsu Prints
Night scenes are natural fits for bedrooms, reading corners, and dimly lit hallways where their warm glow becomes the focal point rather than competing with bright daylight. A single large-format Koitsu print above a bed or sofa creates a calm, contemplative anchor for the room. For a dedicated Japanese art wall, mix Koitsu's night scenes with Hasui Kawase's rain and snow landscapes — the shared shin-hanga aesthetic keeps the wall cohesive while the different lighting conditions create visual variety.
All prints are produced in our Berlin studio using archival pigment inks rated for 100+ years.
