Yamamoto Baiitsu — Edo-Period Ink and Colour Painting

Yamamoto Baiitsu (1783-1856) was a Nanga painter from Nagoya, trained in the Kano and Shijo schools before finding his voice in the Literati tradition. He developed a distinctive technique of combining ink wash with delicate colour washes, giving his nature compositions a lyrical intimacy that sets his work apart from more formal Edo-period painters. Two of his paintings hold the status of important cultural property in Japan. His bamboo paintings are the best known — works of remarkable economy that capture the character of the plant with minimal brushstrokes.

Our Baiitsu prints are reproduced in our Berlin studio on 225g matte fine art paper with archival pigment inks rated for 100+ years. Sizes: A3, 50x70 cm, 70x100 cm, A0. Canvas prints on 400g cotton canvas in 30x40 cm, 50x70 cm, and 70x100 cm. Framing in oak, black, and walnut brown.

The Appeal of Japanese Bamboo Art

Bamboo has a long tradition in East Asian painting as a subject that tests a painter's control of the brush. Baiitsu's bamboo compositions are studies in restraint — each leaf and stalk is placed with purpose, and the negative space between the forms is as considered as the marks themselves. These are prints that bring a sense of calm and order without feeling minimal or cold. They work particularly well in series or as a quiet focal point in a room where the art should not compete for attention.

For more Japanese ink painting, see our Japanese poster collection or browse Watanabe Seitei for another master of the bird-and-flower tradition. Our botanical prints also pair well with Baiitsu's nature studies.
