Tropical Botanicals and Abstract Landscapes

Kristian Gallagher founded her studio Modern Tropical in 2018 during a sabbatical in Hawaii, and that origin story is visible in every piece. Her botanical illustrations — ginger blossoms, tropical foliage, lush garden compositions — combine precise observation with a loose, expressive colour palette that pushes well beyond botanical accuracy into something more atmospheric and emotional.

Her abstract landscapes take a similar approach: recognisable horizon lines and natural forms rendered in saturated, almost luminous colour. The work sits comfortably between illustration and fine art, with enough visual complexity to hold attention on a wall while maintaining the warmth and accessibility that has made her prints popular with major retailers and hospitality brands. That same year she founded Modern Tropical, she won Pottery Barn and Minted’s “Walls That Wow” competition, and her work has since been licensed by Urban Outfitters, Target, and Macy’s — testament to a visual language that connects with a wide audience without sacrificing artistic integrity. Her pieces bring a sense of holiday warmth and natural exuberance to interiors, whether hung alone or as part of a gallery arrangement.

Choosing Between Paper and Canvas

Gallagher’s vibrant colours and detailed botanical linework print beautifully on fine art paper, where the matte surface preserves every petal and leaf edge with clarity. The saturated tropical palette — deep greens, warm oranges, rich pinks — comes through with full intensity on the smooth paper surface, making this the ideal format for her more detailed botanical illustrations. Paper prints are available in A3, 50×70 cm, 70×100 cm, and A0, with oak, black, or walnut brown frames. Oak complements the warm tropical palette particularly well, creating a cohesive warmth between frame and image. Black frames add contemporary contrast that suits modern interiors.

On canvas, the cotton weave adds a textural warmth that enhances the painterly quality of her abstract landscapes. The surface grain gives the printed image a physical presence that suits the loose, expressive brushwork in her landscape compositions, making the work feel closer to an original painting than a reproduction. Canvas prints come in 30×40 cm, 50×70 cm, and 70×100 cm, with an optional floating frame for a gallery finish.
