What to Consider When Choosing Living Room Art

The living room is where art gets the most viewing time. A piece above the sofa or next to a bookshelf will be seen daily for years, so pick something that holds your attention rather than something that simply matches a cushion. Think about wall dimensions first: a single 70×100cm print makes a statement, while a set of three A3 prints creates a gallery wall without overwhelming the room. Lighting matters too — if you have a south-facing window, matte fine art paper handles direct light better than glass-framed prints, which can reflect glare.

Consider the distance from which you’ll see the art. Large-scale landscape prints with depth and detail reward you from across the room. Smaller, more intricate pieces — like detailed botanical illustrations — work better on walls you walk past closely.

Styles and Subjects That Work

Living rooms benefit from subjects with staying power. Japanese woodblock prints — Hokusai, Hiroshige, Hasui — have been doing that job for centuries. Their compositions balance detail and calm in a way that doesn’t tire. Abstract art works if you want colour and energy without a literal subject anchoring the mood. Sizes and Framing for the Living Room

For the main wall above a sofa, 50×70cm or 70×100cm gives the right visual weight. Anything smaller risks looking lost. A canvas print at 70×100cm works especially well as a standalone piece — the texture adds presence without needing a frame.

For gallery walls, A3 is the sweet spot. Three to five A3 prints in matching frames (oak or black) create a cohesive layout. Mix subjects if you like, but keep frame colour consistent.

Framing options: oak frames add warmth and suit vintage or botanical subjects. Black frames sharpen contrast and suit modern or abstract work. Walnut brown sits in between — rich and grounded.
