What to Consider When Choosing Bedroom Art

The bedroom is the room you see first thing in the morning and last at night. That changes what works on the wall. High-contrast, busy compositions can feel agitating in a space meant for rest. Muted palettes — soft greens, warm neutrals, dusty blues — tend to age well here. This is also the room where personal meaning matters most. A print that reminds you of a trip, a place, or a subject you genuinely love will always outperform something chosen to match the bedding.

Think about placement. Above the headboard, you want something wide enough to anchor the bed — 50×70cm minimum, 70×100cm for king-size beds. On a side wall or above a dresser, A3 or 30×40cm canvas gives a quieter accent.

Styles and Subjects That Work

Botanical prints are a natural fit — literally. Fern studies, flower illustrations, and herbarium sheets bring organic texture without visual noise. Japanese art works exceptionally well in bedrooms: Hasui’s quiet landscapes and Hiroshige’s rain scenes have a meditative quality that earns its place on a bedroom wall.

Nature prints — forests, coastlines, soft mountain scenes — give depth without intensity. If you lean toward the minimal, abstract prints with reduced palettes and simple forms keep the wall interesting without competing for attention.

Canvas prints add a layer of warmth through texture alone. A canvas art print in a 50×70cm format above the bed gives the room a grounded, gallery-quality feel — especially in oak or walnut brown framing.
