Mary Vaux Walcott

Mary Vaux Walcott's Botanical Watercolours

Walcott spent over forty years painting wildflowers across North America, often working in the field during expeditions through the Canadian Rockies. Her watercolours are remarkable for their dual purpose — they are both scientifically accurate records and genuinely beautiful paintings. Each flower is rendered with careful attention to form, petal structure, leaf arrangement, and colour gradation, yet the results never feel clinical. There is a softness and warmth in her handling of watercolour that gives even the most precisely detailed specimen a sense of life and presence.

The Smithsonian's 1925 publication of 400 of her paintings in the five-volume North American Wild Flowers cemented her place in both botanical history and the broader tradition of American nature illustration. Her work sits alongside Audubon's birds and Redoute's roses — art made in service of observation that transcends its original purpose. Choosing the Right Format

Walcott's watercolours are line-driven and detail-rich, which makes fine art paper the natural first choice. Prints on 225g matte paper in A3, 50x70cm, 70x100cm, and A0 render every petal edge, colour wash, and botanical detail with clarity and fidelity. Oak frames complement the warm, natural palette of wildflower subjects, while walnut brown adds a period-appropriate warmth. Canvas prints in 30x40cm, 50x70cm, and 70x100cm offer a softer, more textured interpretation — the linen-like surface smooths fine lines slightly and adds warmth, creating a more painterly impression. An optional floating frame adds a clean gallery finish.

Displaying Botanical Art

Walcott's flower paintings suit almost any room but feel particularly at home in bright, naturally lit spaces — bedrooms, hallways, studies, and kitchens. A pair of botanical prints with matching frames creates a classic symmetrical arrangement. For a gallery wall, combine Walcott's wildflowers with other botanical illustrators from our collection, or pair them with floral art prints for a cohesive nature-themed display. The restrained palette and timeless style ensure these pieces work equally well in contemporary and traditional interiors.

All prints are produced in our Berlin studio using archival pigment inks rated for 100+ years.
