What to Consider When Choosing Bathroom Art

Bathrooms present two challenges: humidity and limited wall space. Both are easy to solve with the right format. A framed print behind glass protects the paper from moisture — this is the single most important choice for a bathroom. If you prefer canvas, the 400g cotton surface handles humid air well, especially mounted on a stretcher bar that keeps it off the wall.

Space is the other factor. Most bathrooms offer one usable wall — often above the toilet, beside a mirror, or opposite the shower. Measure before you browse. A3 (297×420mm) is the most common bathroom format. It fits tight walls without feeling cramped.

Styles and Subjects That Work

Botanical prints lead the field here. Fern studies, seaweed illustrations, and flower engravings suit the organic, water-adjacent atmosphere of a bathroom. Nature prints — shells, corals, coastal scenes — pick up on the same thread.

Abstract prints work when you want colour and form without a literal subject anchoring the mood. A single abstract piece in soft blues or greens can anchor a small wall. Japanese woodblock prints — especially water scenes, koi fish, or rain landscapes — bring a meditative quality that fits the room naturally.

Vintage illustrations of marine life, anatomical studies, or natural history plates are another strong option. They bring detail and character to a room that’s often overlooked.

Sizes and Framing for the Bathroom

A3 framed is the default bathroom format. It’s the right scale for the walls you actually have. If you have a wider stretch of wall — above a freestanding tub, for instance — 50×70cm works.

For canvas, 30×40cm is the bathroom size. It gives presence without overwhelming a small room. On a narrow wall, hang it portrait orientation for a vertical accent.

Framing matters more here than in any other room. Always frame behind glass for paper prints in a bathroom. Black frames give a modern, clean look that suits tiled walls. Oak softens the space and pairs well with wooden bathroom accessories. Walnut brown adds warmth to cooler-toned rooms.

All prints are made to order in our Berlin studio with gallery-quality archival pigment inks. Explore our canvas art prints for frameless options, or browse all prints to find the right subject for your wall.
