The Foundations: Ukiyo-e and Its Pioneers

The Edo period (1603-1868) marked the rise of ukiyo-e, or “pictures of the floating world,” a genre that depicted landscapes, folklore, and everyday life. One of the most influential artists of this time was Hokusai, whose Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji included the iconic The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
