John Stephenson (1790–1864), a London physician, and James Morss Churchill (1796–1863), a British botanist and surgeon, co-authored Medical Botany, a four-volume study of medicinal plants published from 1831. Its hand-colored plates recorded British medicinal and poisonous plants, including rhatany and sassafras, with the precision needed for pharmacological identification.

Churchill also published the first English-language article on acupuncture, in 1821.
