Dianne Nicole Fernando — Between Traditional and Digital Media
Dianne Nicole Fernando is a Manila-based artist whose practice spans painting, illustration, graphic design, and photography. As a former senior multimedia artist for BluPrint magazine, she brings a refined visual sensibility to both traditional and digital media. That editorial background shows in her compositions — there is an awareness of space, balance, and visual rhythm that gives each piece a polished immediacy without sacrificing expressiveness.
Working with gouache, watercolor, oil pastels, and digital tools, Fernando moves fluidly between stylistic approaches. Pieces like Summer Girl demonstrate her ability to capture mood and personality through bold colour and confident mark-making. The range of her media reflects genuine versatility rather than restlessness — each technique serves a different expressive purpose, and the transitions feel natural rather than forced. The watercolour work carries softness and spontaneity, while the digital pieces offer graphic precision and saturated colour.
What distinguishes Fernando's work is the combination of design discipline and artistic intuition. The graphic design training provides structure — strong composition, intentional colour choices, clean spatial relationships. The painting and illustration practice provides warmth and spontaneity. The result sits in a productive space between the two, where visual precision meets expressive freedom. Whether working with physical pigments or digital brushes, the compositional intelligence and emotional warmth remain constant.
Print Formats and Framing
Fine art paper is an excellent match for Fernando's illustrative work — the 225g matte surface reproduces the delicate tonal gradations of her watercolor and gouache techniques with clarity. Clean lines, subtle washes, and textural detail all come through without interference from surface reflection. Paper prints are available in A3, 50x70cm, 70x100cm, and A0, framed in oak, black, or walnut brown.
On canvas, the 400g cotton surface adds tactile warmth to her bolder, more painterly compositions. The textured surface complements the expressive brushwork and pastel textures, giving the print a presence that bridges illustration and fine art. The woven surface works particularly well with her gouache pieces, where the opacity and texture of the medium translate naturally. Canvas prints come in 30x40cm, 50x70cm, and 70x100cm, with an optional floating frame.
