About Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954) was one of the most influential artists of modern art. Known for his bold use of colour, fluid lines, and innovative compositions, he worked as a painter, draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, though he is celebrated primarily for his painting.

Alongside Pablo Picasso, Matisse helped shape the major artistic revolutions of the early 20th century. His early works (1900–1905) made him a leading figure of Fauvism, a movement defined by intense, expressive colour. After 1906, his style shifted toward simplified shapes, flattened forms, and strong decorative pattern. By the 1920s, working in Nice, he developed a softer, elegant approach that aligned him with the classical tradition in French art.

From the 1930s onward, Matisse embraced even greater simplification. In his later years, after illness made painting difficult, he pioneered his famous cut paper collages, or “painting with scissors,” creating iconic works such as The Snail and Blue Nude II.

Matisse began painting at age 21 while recovering from appendicitis — a moment he described as discovering his life’s purpose. His long, inventive career and his creative dialogue (and friendly rivalry) with Picasso cemented his place as one of the defining artists of modernism.
