Iona Gilburt Art Prints – Intricate Freehand Illustration

Iona Gilburt is a Cape Town-based illustrator who works with intricate, freehand linework to explore the meeting point between inner and outer worlds. Inspired by nature's grace and quiet transformations, her detailed patterns and asymmetrical forms reflect themes of growth, balance, and change. Hand-drawn with pen, her illustrations carry a delicate, meditative quality rooted in curiosity and observation.

At Kuriosis, we produce every Iona Gilburt print in our Berlin studio using archival Japanese pigment inks rated for over 100 years of colour stability. Fine art paper prints are made on 225g matte stock in sizes A3, 50×70 cm, 70×100 cm, and A0 — the sharp matte surface captures every pen stroke and intricate detail of her freehand work. Canvas prints use 400g cotton canvas in 30×40 cm, 50×70 cm, and 70×100 cm. Framing options include oak, black, and walnut brown.

Nature, Pattern, and the Drawn Line

Gilburt's illustrations are built from thousands of individual marks — lines that weave, branch, and accumulate into organic forms. Each piece begins with pen on paper and develops intuitively, reflecting the slow growth patterns found in nature. The resulting works feel alive with movement, despite their stillness on the page.
