Ute Rathmann

Ute Rathmann is a Berlin-based artist whose work explores the relationship between the human body, clothing, and form. Influenced by vintage fashion silhouettes, she creates pieces through deconstruction and renewal — tearing old drawings apart and reassembling them as the foundation for new work.

Ute Rathmann Art Prints — Figure, Fashion, and Collage from Berlin

Ute Rathmann works from her Berlin studio, building images that sit at the intersection of fashion illustration, figurative art, and collage. Her process is physical and iterative: she tears apart earlier drawings, reassembles fragments, and uses these layered surfaces as the starting point for new compositions. The result is work that carries visible history — marks from previous versions bleeding through, edges left deliberately raw, colour applied in bold, confident strokes.

Her subjects are drawn from the world of vintage fashion — eccentric silhouettes, dramatic hats, exaggerated proportions — but the treatment is far from nostalgic. Rathmann strips these references back to gesture and form, creating figures that feel contemporary despite their historical echoes. Each piece captures a fleeting moment: a turn of the head, the weight of fabric, the tension between stillness and movement.

Prints That Honour the Handmade Process

At Kuriosis, we print Rathmann's work on 225g museum-grade fine art paper using Japanese archival pigment inks rated for over 100 years. The matte surface holds the textural nuance of her collage work — visible paper edges, layered tones, the grain of torn surfaces — in a way that glossy media cannot. Available in A3, 50×70 cm, 70×100 cm, and A0, with frame options in oak, black, and walnut brown.

For a warmer, more tactile presentation, our 400g cotton canvas prints bring out the painterly quality of her brushwork. Available in 30×40 cm, 50×70 cm, and 70×100 cm, with optional floating frames that add a 5 mm shadow gap. Explore more contemporary artists or browse our figurative art collection.
